Time for a Picnic

The story for this one is............... teaching techniques.

This one is my design and specifically designed to teach piecing techniques to beginner quilters in a class at my favourite fabric/sewing shop "The Stitch House" here in Brisbane, Australia.

A great quilt for picnics in summer

..... the rest of the story

I have used a specific fabric range that is available at The Stitch House as the basis for this quilt. So in some respects the fabric came first. I designed the pattern in my EQ looking at using a variety of blocks and including the Easy 8 method for making HST's.

The range of fabric is "The Stitch Garden" by Benartex

The Stitch Garden range of fabric - Tonal Sexy Lime
The Stitch Garden range of fabric - Hoops and Stitch Lime
The Stitch Garden range of fabric - Cross Stitch Green
The Stitch Garden range of fabric - Floral Roselime
an easy and colourful quilting block

I chose a number of blocks for their ease of construction for a beginner's class with a little challenge using the Easy 8 method of creating HST's

The border block using contrasting colours
The maple leaf block as a corner block is very effective
simple squares make an interesting block

There was a lot of green in this quilt and it was beginning to blend and the block designs were disappearing............. Time to break things up with a bit of colour!

Looking at the colours within the fabric pattern, pink stood out as the obvious choice, and so a border was included

using a contrast colour for the border
pink contrasts well with the green in this quilt
