A Murder of Crows

Oh there is quite a story to this quilt!

It all started with a "one liner comment".......... which affectionately gave a very lovely lady a new nickname............. which lead to crow items appearing as gifts.................. and a wonderful find one day in a fabric shop of crow fabric................ and then of course a quilt and a bag......

A colour wash of crows!

..... the rest of the story

The starting fabric is a horizontal panel of various crow blocks. Some with light background and some with dark background. I wanted to play with colour wash as well as highlighting the crow block for their slight differences.

fussy cut crows!

I started with fussy cutting the crows, so that I could play with layout and sashing.

Different coloured sashing allowed the crow blocks to be the focus, as there was variation within the blocks themselves.

using varied coloured sashing for highlighting the crows

And a Crow quilt that is going to be taken to quilting retreats......... needs a Crow bag to travel in!

There was spare blocks and they were a perfect size for a bag. Just love it when a plan comes together so well.

A bag for carrying the quilt

The quilt  design itself is quite simple.

I fussy cut the blocks giving 1/4" seam allowance.

The sashing was 2.5"

I determined the overall size based on the block and sashing size.

Created the rows to consider the various crows and the colour wash of the background.

Simply sewed them together.

Gave it a border and quilted it on a long arm Bernina QMatic to give myself the choice of quilting design.

The best moment of all was giving it to my favourite "old crow"

By the way a group of crows is known as a murder of crows...........Why I ask......... google it to find out!
