Gateway to Colour Quilt

The Gateway to Colour quilt is one of my favourites! It all started with the decision to use up some of my stash.........

I opened one of my fabric tubs and found a jelly roll of Kaffe Fasset fabric, but only really liked the black and white strips. Underneath some other material I found half a jelly roll of the orange and pink fabric I have used in the tower.

An idea was born! I made the towers, then surrounded each tower with black and white fabric.

Once I had used up what I had in the jelly roll, I decided the size of the quilt, and as is usually the case, I did not have enough blocks, so I added in various other black and white fabric, till I was happy with the number of blocks and the colour combinations.

Placing them together though, showed me that the vibrancy of the quilt was lost in a maze of black and white, so the quilt needed sashing.

The idea for the pink and orange came from the friendly staff at my favourite fabric shop. Dividing the quilt into two sections and colour washing the black and white blocks gave it a powerful appeal.

Finishing it with a black and white backing, purple cotton for quilting with a geometic design and binding constructed from scraps completes the picture.
