Gateway to Colour Quilt
This one was fun to make. The story starts with a decision to use up some of my stash........ so I took the lid off a tub and............

..... the rest of the story
I found a Jelly roll of Kaffe Fasset fabric, but I only really liked the black and white. Inside the tub was a half roll of pinks and orange Kaffe designed fabric, which I decided went well with the black and white..... so the tower gateway blocks were created. No quilt yet!

Having made the blocks, there was not enough of them for a quilt, so I auditioned some other black and white fabric, choosing the hearts and plain black, as by this time I had decided to go with a colour wash effect down and across the quilt.

The blocks next to each other however, got lost, merging into each other and really having no impact. So the idea of the sashing was born - but what colour?
I think we all have our favourite fabric shop! I certainly do. It is quite close here in Brisbane, so off I went for the sashing fabric. I left the suggestions up to the friendly staff and yep - pink and orange it was! It adds such vibrancy to the quilt, it is far enough away from the towers, not to impact and it separated the black and white sections beautifully. The two colours allowed me to further the colour wash concept as well by splitting the quilt into two sections. The sashing colours were continued into the borders and the binding has been made of scraps of the towers and the sashing. It will take the eye to the binding, but in a good way.

The block design itself is quite simple.
3 strips of 2.5" to create the towers.
6.5" strips on all 4 sides.
Sashing below each block on alternate columns and
above each block on the other coloumns.
2.5" sashing between the columns.
Sew the blocks in columns not rows.
Border, quilt, bind and enjoy.
